Stellenbosch, South Africa is home to rich wine country, breath taking European-inspired architecture, and the famous Stellenbosh University. Within walking distance of this wealthy and culturally advanced town is the devastatingly poor village named Kayamundi where approximately 20,000 South Africans live in squatter conditions with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Illiteracy levels and unemployment rates are very high which easily increase the rate of growing health problems including HIV/AIDS.
Stellenbosch Gemeente is a sister church to Mars Hill in many ways, which has led to their partnership and continued interest in learning together how to best meet the needs of the world. One of the ways that Stellenbosch Gemeente is already meeting the needs of their neighbors is through The Legacy Centre, a community development organization that hosts programs such as day care, micro-economic classes, tutoring, art classes and HIV education.
In keeping with the requests of the staff of The Legacy Centre, we were able to send them $1000 to purchase much-needed storage cabinets for their small school. We also had 6 backpacks crammed full of school supplies hand delivered to the staff in February!
