Research Trip,
South Africa 2005

Our friend Charlie hangs out with the boys
in Kayamandi... and Jeff!

I just absolutely LOVE the faces in this
picture! We were trailed
by so many
happy and friendly children on our walk
through Kayamandi in Stellenbosch, South
Africa.

For this great picture, both of these kids
got an apple from my backpack!

When there is no rope available, use wire
instead!

One day this week we visited the cemetery
in Stellenbosch. It was both
a frustrating and sobering reminder of
the daily deaths caused by HIV/AIDS.
Pictured here is the children's area of the cemetery. |

This is the choir of beautiful girls who
greeted us in song at the Legacy Center
in Kayamandi. Their songs made me cry!

Another face I couldn't get enough of! |

As I mentioned in the blog, we had the opportunity
to tour & visit the Living
Hope Hospice Center. This is there main medical
facility and was just opened in November 2004.
It is well-planned, well-staffed and I'm told,
there
is nothing better in all of South Africa.
Right:
In Johannesburg we visited 2 AIDS baby homes. This is the smaller of the
two and is called the Sun-Child Home. It
can comfortably house 6 babies
and 2 full-time house parents. |

This baby lives at Sun-Child. Her twin brother
is HIV- and she is
HIV+.
Right:
The laundry must be never-ending at a house
with 6 babies! |

This is second of the two AIDS baby homes that
we visited that morning. At capacity,
it can hold up to 15 babies, 2 full-time house
parents and their
2 teenage daughters.
Right:
Inside the Florida Home--this room is directly adjacent to the main nursery.
I loved the attention to details and the bright cheerful nature of this
whole
house!
